White Moss House and the ash cloud

As the flights re start today, lets hope that all those who find themselves in the wrong part of the world get back as soon as possible.
I have to say that we have benefitted this week from the ash, with guests who have been unable to go abroad coming to stay at White Moss House instead.
They’ve been rewarded with the best , sunniest weather they could wish for. It’s still chilly, but it just fabulous.
The quince is out, the cherries are out, the magnolia is coming out, the azaleas are coming out- there’s no better time to visit White Moss House,our Grasmere 4 Star guest house.

The AA lady came yesterday- very impressed to see that we had beautiful  new fire doors, new carpet ( room 2) new decoration (room 3). Apparently lots of people of not spending in the recession, and some of the places she visits are getting a bit run down.

Post script to the Ash Cloud Story- a Japanese guest coming in May has just emailed me to ask what it’s like driving around on ash covered roads!
No ash on roads or anywhere else! The lakes never looked better.

Herdwick sheep at White Moss House Grasmere part 2

So, there are about 6 of the blighters (Herdwicks) that is, in the garden, nibbling the daffodils.

Husband opens the gate, and we both chase them towards the gate, when a group of tourists walk by, stand in the gateway with their cameras, blocking the sheep who turn and run off to an inaccessible part of the garden.

Chap with camera says ” I say, are those a local breed? What ? Herdwicks? Marvellous !How interesting!”

Don’t you just love tourists? Well ,we do of course- no question about that!

You have to laugh.

Sheep in the garden again this morning. Both local farmers claim they’re not theirs, then if the marking proves they are, they blame the Rydal Estate for not mending the walls! Hey Ho!
We’ll just live with them as usual. Once they’ve got the taste of fresh grass there’s no stopping them.
I’ve just written an article about the herdwick Herdwick Sheep– please take a look and leave me any messages or links you would like to see.
Our local Herdwicks haven’t lambed yet- they are the last to lamb in the area ( maybe in the while country)- the farmer aims for April 23rd- St Georges Day.

Osprey watch on the White Moss House Grasmere blog!

Thanks to the wonders of widgets, I can offer you a link to the Bassenthwaite Ospreys!
Just 25 minutes drive away from Rydal Water, Grasmere and White Moss House- another great natural event on our doorstep!

Its seem that along with Daffodils, and lambing, we can now add the Ospreys to the Lake District Spring Events. Fingers crossed for a successful 2010 Osprey birth!

It’s great time for walking in the Lakes

The Easter rush is over, and the summer rush is some time away, so now is a great time to visit the lakes.
Now the clocks have gone forward it stays light until after 8pm, so long walks are no problem. High pressure is forecast, and beautiful clear skies and superb views are everywhere.

Wishing all our guests past , present and future a very Happy Easter.
It’s sunny, dry and cold, the Daffodils are beautiful and it’s not as busy as Easter often is. Lots of B & Bs and hotels in Grasmere actually have vacancy signs out today- something I’ve never seen before.

White Moss House Wordsworth Daffodils

1st April 2010. The daffodils are looking great at White Moss House, Rydal Water, Grasmere.These small, wild daffodils on the banking overlooking Rydal Water are the variety that Wordsworth wrote about in his famous poem, Daffodils.

Smaller doubles down from £90 per night to £70.

Spring has sprung in Grasmere

There are two woodpeckers attacking the trees in the back garden with great vigour. The other birds are skittering all over in a very flighty ( is that where the word came from?) manner, and the Daffodils are out at last.
