The Coast of Cumbria

The Coast of Cumbria

Many visitors to our Grasmere Cottage  never move their car for the whole of their stay. They never think of visiting the coast of Cumbria. They walk everywhere, occasionally catching the local buses if they want to go further afield. They take a break from the car- why not when you’re staying in such a wonderful location?

However, some guests do venture out of the main Lakes, and head west to the Cumbrian Coast. You might be surprised to know that there are some lovely beaches in Cumbria and there are some great coast walks that you can do.

Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk   starts at St Bees. For a shorter walk the St Bees to Whitehaven path is beautiful.

The Beacon Museum and Whitehaven harbour

Whitehaven has been spruced up a lot in recent years. The Marina looks amazing, and there is the Beacon Museum  to visit. In 1778 American Naval Officer John Paul Jones led an attack on Whitehaven. Here is the statue of him spiking the guns. The raid failed, and this was the last, maybe only, attack by America on British soil.
